NOTICE OF PROMOTIONAL EXAMINATION
POSITION OF DEPUTY FIRE CHIEF
VAN WERT FIRE DEPARTMENT

 

An oral promotional examination for the position of Deputy Fire Chief in the Van Wert Fire Department will be conducted on March 11, 2026 at 9:00 a.m., by the Van Wert Municipal Civil Service Commission. Eligible candidates will be notified in writing of the scheduled date, time, and location following the close of the application period.

In accordance with Civil Service rules, the eligibility list established from this examination shall remain in effect for a period of two (2) years or until exhausted.

Posting

One (1) oral examination will be administered. The results of this examination will be used to fill the position of one (1) Deputy Fire Chief in the Van Wert Fire Department, in the order of ranking as determined by the examination process.

Qualifications

To be eligible to participate in the Deputy Fire Chief promotional examination, an applicant must:

  • Be currently serving in the rank of Captain within the Van Wert Fire Department
  • Not be serving a probationary period
  • Meet all minimum qualifications established by the Van Wert Municipal Civil Service Commission

Examination Content

The promotional examination will consist of an Oral Board Interview conducted on behalf of the Van Wert Municipal Civil Service Commission. The board will evaluate each candidate’s ability to perform the duties of Deputy Fire Chief, including leadership, training oversight, fire prevention administration, and organizational management.

A minimum passing score will be established by the Civil Service Commission. Seniority credit, if applicable, will be added in accordance with Commission policy. A psychological evaluation or additional assessment may be required at the discretion of the Commission.
